Based on the fifth-generation W213 Mercedes E-Class produced from 2016, the AMG-tuned and engineered E43, E53 and E63 variants represent the high-performance examples of Mercedes’ iconic mid to high-range model.

The AMG lineup has predominantly been composed of two main variants with the more powerful variant being available in two states of tune. Initially the 3.0-litre bi-turbo V6 E43 and twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 E63 4MATIC+ (and more powerful E63S 4MATIC+) were available from 2016 however the E43 was replaced by the turbocharged 3-litre inline 6-cylinder E53 as of 2018.

A mid-life facelift in 2021 has seen the AMG W213 models receive updated front and rear fascias while inside, COMAND has been replaced by MBUX with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and revised touch-sensitive controls. Driver-assistance and safety technology was also updated.

While all AMG E-Class models provide superb levels of performance while retaining the luxury expected of the E-Class, just how much power and performance you require is obviously subjective, however, we feel the E53 is the sweet spot in the range.

  • Reports that the high beam assist system can fail or become faulty, however, this is generally caused by dirt or ice building up on the windscreen over the location of the sensors and cameras. It is generally easily fixed by cleaning the windscreen glass
  • Reports of the panoramic roof can develop rattles and squeaks. The fix is usually the roof mechanicals needing some lubrication but Mercedes should have resolved this under warranty
  • There is the occasional report of infotainment and interior control electronic gremlins however these should have been sorted under warranty
  • There are the very occasional reports of the M177 V8 (E63 models) misfiring. This is generally caused by the manifold absolute pressure sensor failing prematurely, sending incorrect information to the ECU. It is an easy and inexpensive fix
  • Our only warning is that as these vehicles are incredibly complex, as they age and begin to wear while simultaneously expiring from their warranty periods, the cost and time required to maintain and service them may become very expensive

Model range, pricing and features

Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG-4

E43 (2016 - 2018)

Price when new: $159,239 - $159,900

Price used: $56,850 - 85,750

While many may see the E43 as the poor man’s E63, it should be recognised as a slightly more mature and marginally larger alternative to the similarly priced C63.

While the E43 won’t bother its V8 big brother in terms of outright performance, it still offers far more prowess than many would assume while offering an excellent ride even when compared to other AMG models.

E53 (2018 - 2021)

Price when new: $159,239 - $188,600

Price used: $80,150 - $146,200

Replacing the E43, it’s important to know the more powerful E53, while a genuine AMG product, is fitted with an engine that while tuned by AMG, is built by people and robots on the Mercedes manufacturing plants rather than the more exclusive AMG “one man, one engine” approach.

Perhaps more importantly, the E53 is AMG’s first electrified step towards hybrid models with the engine (with its conventional turbo) mated to an electric compressor producing a marginal 16kW increase in power. But there’s another 250Nm of electric assistance on tap thanks to the 48-volt EQ Boost starter-alternator that sits between the engine and transmission.

The E53 is our sweet spot of the AMG E-Class range, bridging the gap between its big brother E63 while still offering its own unique, engaging and incredibly appealing attributes.

In our opinion, unless your daily commute includes full throttle adventures down a German autobahn, this is all the AMG E-Class anyone ever needs.

A truly excellent motor vehicle and if your tastes require an AMG E-Class coupe or cabriolet, an E53 will have to be your pick.

E53 adds:

  • Switchable AMG performance exhaust
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (from 2019)
  • New 10-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels (from 2021)
  • Energizing Comfort Control (optional)
  • Sport Edition package (optional)
  • Night package (optional)
  • Carbon package (optional)
  • AMG Dynamic Plus (optional from 2021)
  • 12.3-inch MBUX touchscreen infotainment system (from 2021)
  • Parktronic Active Park Assist (from 2021)
  • Surround-view camera (from 2021)
  • Mercedes Me Connect app integration (from 2021)
  • Wireless smartphone charging (from 2021)
  • Hands-free boot access (from 2021)
  • Driver assistance package (Standard from 2021, optional prior)

E63 and E63S (2016 - 2021)

Price when new: $209,239 - $253,900

Price used: $92,800 - $201,700

The 600-horsepower full-fat variant of the AMG E-Class range offers immense firepower, but surely this level of performance requires an autobahn or a desire for chaos to make any sense as a purchase.

Yes, this is a practical sedan capable of embarrassing more than a few supercars but we argue that the E53 is possibly more fun more of the time for a whole lot less money.

If you can afford an E63 or E63S, chances are you’ve gone and bought it and don’t care what we have to say but if you’re stretching yourself financially to sit behind the wheel of the V8 variant, go drive an E53 before you dig that deep into a financial hole.

E63 & E63S adds:

  • Bespoke front air dam
  • Pumped front guards
  • Performance” front seats
  • Active Comfort package (optional)
  • Deletion of the PRE-SAFE Impulse Side system (unless Active Comfort package is selected)
  • Eight “energising comfort programs” (with ‘Energising Coach’)
  • Active Multicontour front seat package
  • Air Balance’ package (including ionisation)
  • Ceramic composite brakes (Optional)

If you can afford the running costs and justify the depreciation, yes.

Very few other cars can provide what the range of AMG E-Class models can.

The near perfect blend of performance, practicality, luxury, character, technology and safety with immense driving pleasure all wrapped in an understated design, is a very hard combination to deny.

If you can afford it, do it.
